May 20th Knitting Swatch

Our second swatch for May is called "Waterfall Pattern".  It does look like water traveling down stream.  It is a lace but it isn't a difficult pattern.

Level of difficulty:  "Easy"

Materials:  1 Skein cotton yarn
#7 US  Needle
Size: 5 x 6

Cast On: This pattern is a multiple of 6 + 3 (for the swatch we are making 18 + 3=21, + 2 = 23)

Our cast on for this swatch will be:     23 stitches

If I were making a cloth of this pattern, I would cast on 30 + 3 = 33, plus border 6 = 39 stitches.  For a towel I would use the following process:  48 + 3 = 51 + border 8 = 59.  Keep in mind that this is lace and may not be the best design for a towel.

The basic swatch should be the same width and length, this one ran a little long on the length.  To rectify this you should knit till square and then finish off.  If you don’t care that it isn’t an exact square, then go ahead and finish all the rows and then add your border and finish up.
Notes:
YO  =  Yarn Over
K2Tog  =  Knit 2 together
P2Tog  =  Purl 2 together

Border:
Row 1 & 2:     Knit across
Pattern:
Row 1:            (RS) K1, P3, *K3, YO P3*; Repeat between *’s, end K1 (26 stitches)
Row 2:            (WS) * P4, K3 *; Repeat between *’s, end K1   (26 stitches)
Row 3:            K1, P3, *K1, K2Tog, YO K1, P3 *; Repeat between *’s, end K1   (26 stitches)
Row 4:            K4, * P2, P2Tog, K3*; Repeat between *’s, end K1   (23 stitches)
Row 5:            K1, P3, *K1, YO K2Tog, P3*; Repeat between *’s, end K1   (23 stitches)
Row 6:            K4, *P3, K3*; Repeat between *’s, end K1   (23 stitches)

Repeat the above 6 rows 4 more times

Border:
Row 1 & 2:     Knit across
Bind Off

Weave in ends

Revision to Basket Rib

Because this is a multiple of 2 + 1 stitches.  The below count should clear up any issues about borders.

If you cast on 21 stitches it should be broken down like this:

Rows 1-2   Knit across
Pattern:
Row 1  Knit
Row 2: K2, P17, K2
Row 3: K2, K1, *(YIB) Sl 1 (KW), K1* Repeat between * 8 times, end K2
Row 4: K2, K1, *(YIF) Sl 1 (PW), K1 * Repeat between * 8 times, end K2

If you want a dishcloth, I would recommend using 35 stitches for pattern and then add the border of 4 or 6 stitches.

Repeat the above 4 rows till desired length. And end with 2 rows of knit.

If there are further questions please let me know.

May 5th Swatch

Because this is really a “learning” blog we will be doing more than just swatches.

For learning I like to make things as easy as I kind.  To some of the knitters that have been knitting for a while, they can help with the newer knitters.  The instructions will be real basic in “ducky and bunny” terms this is NOT meant to insult anyone.  It is meant to help everyone understand.  Not all patterns are easy to understand and if you want to learn more skills and have more experience it is vital to understand all the terms before going forward.

I do my patterns a little different, most patterns add the specific process “Behind” the stitch numbers…example: YO, Sl 1, YIF.  You don’t need all those comas for one maneuver and any positioning of the yarn should be in front prior to doing the actual stitch:  Example: (YIF) Sl 1 (PW), K1.  This tells you where the yarn should be (Yarn in front) then slip 1 stitch PW (purl wise), K1.  Not as many comas and no confusion as to where the yarn should be for which stitch. If you don’t understand and need more clarity, you have me and the group to question.

Multiple of 2 + 1 (16 + 1 = 17 + border 4 = 21) This is provided in case you want to change the size of the item.  Knowing that the pattern is in increments of 2 + 1 will help you determine how to increase the item.  If you wanted to make a cloth, you might calculate it like this:  2 X 15 = 30, + 1 = 31 + Border sts 6 (3 each end) would give you a cloth with the width of 37 stitches.

Notes:
Sl :  (Slip)
YIB = Yarn in back
YIF =  Yarn in front
Anytime you work a cloth with slip stitches the texture will be a little thicker.

Cast On:  21 Stitches
Border:
Row 1:                        Knit Across
Row 2:                        Knit Across
Pattern:
Row 1:                        Knit Across
Row 2:                        K1, P19, K1
Row 3:                        K2, *(YIB) Sl (KW), K1*; repeat between *’s, K2
Row 4:                        K2, * (YIF) Sl (PW), K1*; repeat between *’s, K2

I knitted the above 4 rows 8 times, then knit 2 rows and bind off.
You want to make it a square, if it only takes you repeating these rows 7 times, then complete the 4 rows 7 times.
